In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate
`He indeed shall be successful who purifies himself.` (Quran 87:14)
Imam Ja`far al-Sadiq (A.S.) said that fasting is incomplete without paying Fitrah, just as Salat is incomplete without invoking blessings on Prophet Muhammad (S.A.W.) and his Ahlul Bayt (A.S.). He would ensure Fitrah was paid for every member of his household, fearing that one whose Fitrah was not given might not survive the year.1. At sunset on Eid al-Fitr night, every adult, sane Muslim must give three kilos of wheat, barley, dates, raisins, rice, or millet—or their equivalent in cash—for themselves and their dependents.
2. The Zakat al-Fitrah amount this year is $15 per person.
3. Fitrah must be paid for all dependents, including young, old, Muslim, and non-Muslim members of the household.
4. It is obligatory to pay Fitrah for a guest who arrives before sunset on Eid night.
5. A non-Sayyid cannot give Fitrah to a Sayyid.
6. As an obligatory precaution, Fitrah should be given to Shia poor who pray and do not commit sins openly.
7. If offering Eid prayers, Fitrah should be paid before the prayer. If not, it can be delayed until Dhuhr (noon). If Fitrah is set aside from one’s wealth, it can be given later.
`Remember Me, and I will remember you. Be thankful to Me, and do not be ungrateful.` (Quran 2:152)
